Sue began working for the family business in 1983. George Gath, Sue's father, founded the company in 1972. Sue didn't start off with her father however. She graduated from University of Lowell (UML) in 1978 with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Upon graduation, she worked for 5 years at Boston City Hospital before making the change. Sue was familiar with the business as she worked for the agency during her high school and college years. Sue became a licensed insurance broker in 1983 and obtained the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation in 1999.

Sue is very active in the business community. She has been a member of the GLWIB for two years now, and sits on the Executive Board Committee. In addition to the WIB, she is a member of the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce, and she is a sponsor of the Chamber's WISE breakfast. She is also the Assistant Director of the Middlesex Chapter of the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Women (MAIW). The MAIW is a not-for-profit association that serves its members by providing professional education, an environment in which to build business alliances, and the opportunity to network with people in the insurance and risk management industry.

Company Description:

George Gath established the family business in 1972 on Merrimack Street in Lowell. He began his career in Life Insurance with John Hancock before venturing off on his own. Sue started with the agency in 1983. In 1990, the company merged with another local insurance agency, TJ Higgins Insurance. They also moved to Chelmsford Street in Lowell in the same year. Sue took over as President in the late 1990's.

After successfully merging with TJ Higgins Insurance, Gath Insurance bought the controlling interest of the firm. Thinking expansion, they opened up a second location in Tewksbury, MA.

George Gath Insurance Agency specializes mostly in personal lines such as auto and homeowners/rental insurance. They also offer services for Life and Small Business Insurance.

Today, George Gath Insurance has four employees in addition to Sue, all women, two are licensed insurance brokers. They have been at their current location on Chelmsford Street for eight years now.
