The Lowell Police Department and the Greater Lowell Workforce
Investment Board Partner for the Executive Office of Public
Safety Grant
The Executive Office of Public Safety awarded a grant to the
Lowell Police Department to partner with the GLWIB and the
Career Center of Lowell to expand summer employment programming.
Specifically
targeted at urban youth in areas at-risk for gang activity and
violence, the grant provides for the City of Lowell Parks and
Recreation Department to add a nighttime basketball program to
their activities, and to the Career Center of Lowell to place an
additional 25 youth in summer employment opportunities
throughout the city. Some of these youth will spend the summer
at the Student Police Academy Program, and others will work at
various sites learning new skills which will help them secure
future employment.
The GLWIB and the LPD were pleased to combine efforts to combat
youth and violence and the inter-agency partnership may lead to
future projects together.
The Governor’s Grant Awarded to the Greater Lowell Workforce
Investment Board
The GLWIB was
recently awarded the Governor’s Grant, “Summer Jobs for Youth
At-Risk” to help place over 100 youth in work experiences this
summer. Over the past several years the GLWIB has worked with
the Career Center of Lowell to implement this grant, designed to
help youth gain new skills at work sites throughout the city
during 7 weeks in the summer.

“Summer Jobs for Lowell Youth”
The Lowell City Manager’s Office, the Greater Lowell Workforce
Investment Board and the Career Center of Lowell are
collaborating on “Summer Jobs for Lowell Youth,” a project that
arose from the need to help teens obtain summer employment.
Local employers have the chance to mentor a youth and help
develop the skills and work ethic of the future workforce, and
teens have the opportunity to build work experience that will
help them become productive members of the workforce.
We are appealing
to Lowell employers to hire a youth for the summer. At a
minimum, it would be a 7-week commitment for 15-30 hours a week
at a wage of at least $8.00 an hour, but some students are
available part-time during the school year as well. The Career
Center of Lowell Youth Department is conducting pre-screenings
and assessments of eligible candidates, as well as preparatory
workshops. Employers will be provided with several appropriate
candidates from which to choose.
For more information, call 978-805-4815 and ask about the Summer
Jobs for Lowell Youth Program.
