Pathways to
Success (P-21)
GLWIB Awarded
P-21 Funding for 2007
The GLWIB applied for and received P-21(Pathways to Success by
21) funding for this year from Commonwealth Corporation. The
latest P-21 project is designed to expand on the services we
offer to the youth in our region, building on past P-21 efforts.
This year we partnered with the Merrimack Valley Workforce
Investment Board to combine resources and invest in Merrimack
Valley Hub, a website where youths can access information on
community resources, including housing, social services,
parenting classes, education and training providers.
Other partners include: Middlesex Community College, to provide
workshops on job readiness and vocational exploration, and
Lowell Adult Basic Education, to provide GED classes and who
also has the capacity to address the needs of ESOL youth.
New P-21 funding will also be used to support the Career Center
of Lowell Youth Resource Room, a space located within the Career
Center of Lowell accessible to youth participants in our
programs. The additional funding will add GED preparation and
tutorial software to the 5 PCs in the room, as many of the youth
in our programs are working towards GED completion.
P-21 2006 : The Career Center of Lowell entered into an
agreement with UML Center for Family Work and Community to
undertake a needs assessment based on the indicators identified
in P-21 research data. The GLWIB received funding to conduct a
survey of local employers and focus groups with local teens to
investigate the issues surrounding youth employment within
Greater Lowell, with a focus on Latino, Asian and
Pregnant/Parenting teens. The study was conducted by the
University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Center for Family Work and
Community.
